The Kusasi or Kusaasi people from Upper East Region of Ghana have a unique traditional marriage process just like every other ethnic group in Ghana. They speak the Kusaal language and their major towns include Bawku, Zebilla, Garu, and Pusiga. Steeped in cultural values, the marriage ceremony is not just about the union of two individuals but about the merging of families and communities. Here’s a closer look at the steps involved in the marriage process alongside a list of the items involved.

Kusasi Traditional Marriage Process.

Knocking at the Door

The first step in the Kusasi marriage process is known as Knocking at the Door. This is a symbolic gesture where the suitor’s family formally expresses interest in the bride. During this initial visit, they present kolanuts as a form of introduction and request to proceed further with the marriage discussions. This moment marks the beginning of the formal relationship between the two families.

Giving Information to the Bride’s Parents

Once the knocking has been accepted, the next step is providing more detailed information to the bride’s parents about the groom. There are a few items that are expected to be presented on a visit which are highlighted on the list below. These items serve to solidify the relationship and show goodwill between both families. It is also the time when the bride’s family can learn more about the groom and his intentions.

Bride Price (Dowry)

The final and most important stage of the Kusasi traditional marriage is the Bride Price. This is a crucial part of the ceremony where the groom is required to offer livestock to the bride’s family as a symbol of appreciation for raising their daughter. The items for the bride price are all listed on the list below.

It is essential to note that the bride price is not always required upfront. Depending on the financial capability of the groom, the delivery of cows can be postponed or fulfilled over time. This flexibility shows a level of understanding between the families and ensures that no undue pressure is placed on the groom.
