Mother of the Groom Duties Before, During, and After the Wedding
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

When your son is getting married, it’s a moment of pride, emotion, and excitement. As the mother of the groom, you may wonder what exactly your duties are is in the wedding process. Traditionally, much attention is given to the bride and her family—but make no mistake, you also play an important role in supporting your son and welcoming your future daughter-in-law into the family.

Here’s a simple guide to help you navigate your duties before, during, and after the big day:

Mother of the Groom Duties Before the Wedding

1. Support the Couple : Your most important role is to offer emotional support. Planning a wedding can be overwhelming, and your son (and his partner) may appreciate your calm presence and practical advice—without overstepping.

2. Help with Guest List : You may be asked to compile a list of family and friends you’d like to invite. Keep in mind the couple’s budget and desired guest count.

3. Coordinate with the Bride’s Family : Traditionally, the mother of the groom reaches out to the bride’s family once the engagement is official. A kind call or meeting to introduce yourself and build a relationship goes a long way in setting a positive tone.

4. Contribute to Planning (If Asked) : The couple may involve you in aspects of planning such as guest lists, cultural traditions, or sourcing vendors. Be available, but let them take the lead unless they ask for help.

Mother of the Groom During the Wedding

1. Dress the Part : The mother of the groom should coordinate with the mother of the bride regarding outfits—avoiding clashing colors or overdressing. Choose something elegant that fits the formality of the event.

2. Welcome Guests : As a host, you’ll likely greet guests, especially those from your side of the family. Your warmth helps set the tone for the celebration.

3. Take Part in Traditions : Depending on your culture, there may be specific roles for the groom’s mother, such as symbolic gifts, prayers, or family introductions. Be proud to represent your side.

4. Support Your Son : Wedding days are full of emotion. Offer last-minute encouragement, help with small tasks, or just be a calm presence to ease his nerves.

After the Wedding

1. Help with Thank You Notes : If the couple is overwhelmed post-honeymoon, offer to help organize or send thank-you notes, especially to guests from your side.

2. Stay in Touch : Continue to nurture your relationship with your new daughter-in-law. Send a thoughtful message, share a meal, or simply let her know she’s welcome.

3. Respect Their Space : As they settle into married life, give them space to grow together, while remaining available for guidance and support.
