When you are planning a traditional marriage in Ghana, it is important to know the components of the marriage list. If you are getting married into the Fante tribe, this guide specifically addresses the Fante Traditional Marriage List when a child is involved, outlining the items required from the groom’s family.

Having a child before marriage adds certain elements to the list. It is popularly known as the “Kwasiaboua. Also known as Domfar, it is the price paid for “disrespecting the bride by getting her pregnant before marrying her”. This practice highlights the importance of responsibility and respect in most Ghanaian communities. It also emphasizes that marriage is a sacred institution, and any deviation from its traditional path comes with obligations.

The Fante Traditional Marriage List is a collection of items, cash payments, and gifts required from the groom’s family to the bride’s family. Additionally, when a child is involved, additional components like the Domfar (a fine for pregnancy before marriage) are included, making it crucial to understand these specific requirements.

Important Items on the List.

The key components on the list are:

  • Knocking Ceremony: to formally ask for the bride’s hand.
  • Acceptance Fee: a sign of acceptance by the bride’s family.
  • Domfar: A fine for having a child with the bride before marriage, known as ‘Kwasibuoa.’
  • Dowry (Tsir Sika): as a bride price.
  • Drinks: Schnapp, Whiskey, and Akpeteshie
  • Father’s Items
  • Mother’s Items
  • Bride’s Belongings
  • Presentations for brothers-in-law
  • Thank you

Can you ask for reductions? Yes, the list is not fixed. The groom’s family can negotiate items and amounts based on their financial situation, making the process more manageable.
