Marriage is a beautiful journey that brings two people together to build a future. However, good health is a key foundation for a happy marriage. Before saying “I do,” couples should take important pre-wedding medical tests to ensure they are both healthy and aware of any potential health concerns. These tests help in family planning, preventing hereditary diseases, and ensuring a safe and fulfilling married life. In African cultures, marriage is not just about the couple but also about their families and future generations.

In the olden days in Africa, before accepting to marry or be married into a family, families carried out their own investigations to understand the background of the other family. They examined factors such as hereditary illnesses, mental health conditions, and other traits that could affect future generations. This practice helped ensure the well-being of both partners and their children. It shouldn’t be different today.

Health issues such as sickle cell disease, infections, and fertility problems can affect a marriage if not detected early. By taking these pre-wedding medical tests, couples can make informed decisions, protect each other, and plan for a healthy future together. Here are key tests to consider before marriage:

Pre-Wedding Medical Tests Before Marriage.

1. Sickling Test

This test checks if you carry the sickle cell trait or have sickle cell disease. If both partners have the trait, there is a risk of passing sickle cell disease to their children.

2. Genotype Test

This helps determine your genetic makeup, especially in relation to sickle cell disease. Common genotypes include AA, AS, and SS. Knowing your genotype helps in family planning.

3. Blood Grouping & Rhesus Factor

Your blood group (A, B, AB, or O) and Rh factor (positive or negative) matter, especially for pregnancy. If a mother is Rh-negative and the baby is Rh-positive, complications may arise, but they can be managed with medical care.

4. Hepatitis B & C Test

Hepatitis B and C are viral infections that can damage the liver. They can be passed from one partner to another or from mother to child. Early detection helps in managing the condition.

5. HIV Test

HIV is a serious virus that affects the immune system. Knowing your HIV status before marriage helps in protecting each other and planning for a healthy life.

6. STI Screening (Syphilis, Gonorrhea, etc.)

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) like syphilis and gonorrhea can cause infertility and other health problems. Testing and treatment before marriage prevent complications.

7. Blood Sugar Levels

Checking for diabetes helps in managing blood sugar levels. If one partner has diabetes, lifestyle adjustments can be made to ensure a healthy marriage.

8. Thalassemia Test

Thalassemia is a blood disorder that affects red blood cells. If both partners carry the gene, their children may inherit a severe form of the disease.

9. Fertility Tests

These tests help couples understand their chances of having children. They check sperm health in men and ovulation in women, helping in early planning.

10. Mental Health Assessment

A mental health check helps in understanding emotional well-being. Conditions like depression and anxiety can be managed with support and care.

11. Genetic Disorder Tests

Some families carry genes for conditions like Down syndrome or cystic fibrosis. A genetic test helps in knowing the risks and making informed decisions.
